Game Freak, the developer behind the Pokémon franchise, has partnered with Western publisher Take-Two Interactive to create a new action-adventure game, Project Bloom. The game will be published under Take Two's Private Division label and promises a "bold and tonally different" experience compared to Game Freak's previous titles.
Concept artwork for Project Bloom, illustrated by Kazuma Koda, a renowned artist known for his work on games like Nier: Automata, Bayonetta 2, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, has been released. The image depicts a lone warrior in a swampy forest, dressed in traditional Japanese attire and wielding a sword. Surrounding the warrior is a flurry of spores or fireflies, possibly alluding to the project's name.
Scheduled for release during Take-Two Interactive's 2026 fiscal year, running from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, Project Bloom is eagerly anticipated.
Kota Furushima, director at Game Freak, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, "From the beginning, Private Division was the publisher we wanted to work with on our new game. Their track record and global expertise give us all the confidence to create a sweeping new action-adventure game that we can't wait to share more about in the future."
Michael Worosz, chief strategy officer at Take-Two Interactive and head of Private Division, also shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying, "We're honored to be the first Western publisher to work alongside this exceptionally talented and proven team to bring a bold new IP to market."
Game Freak is renowned for developing numerous Pokémon games for The Pokémon Company and Nintendo over the past three decades. The developer has also collaborated with Nintendo and other publishers on original titles like Drill Dozer, HarmoKnight, Tembo the Badass Elephant, and Pocket Card Jockey.
Established in 2017, Private Division has published games such as The Outer Worlds, Kerbal Space Program 2, OlliOlli World, Rollerdrome, and Hades, working with various developers. In 2022, the publisher announced collaborations with studios Die Gute Fabrik, Evening Star, Piccolo Studio, and Yellow Brick Games, as well as a partnership with Wētā Workshop on a new Lord of the Rings game set in Middle-earth.
